Intellectual Property Acquisition Opportunity

Barnsby

Hilco Streambank is marketing for sale or license the prestigious British heritage brand Barnsby.

BID DEADLINE

Friday, August 23 2019 at Noon BST (British Summer Time)

Background

Barnsby is an iconic equestrian and lifestyle brand with an illustrious 200 year heritage.

With roots at the centre of the English saddlery industry dating back to 1793, Barnsby became known as one of the most sought after saddle and bridle manufacturers in the world. The brand was traded by seven generations of the Cliff family until being acquired by our client, an international e-commerce retailer and sports branding company, following the administration of Jabez Cliff & Company Limited t/a Barnsby Cliff.

Historically, Barnsby supplied market leading saddlery equipment and leather leisure goods, including luggage, belts and clothing, throughout the UK and exported to continental Europe, the USA, China, Japan and Australia. Most recently, the brand has been applied to equine accessories sold online to consumers globally.

The Barnsby brand has close links to the British military and royalty, as well as having a loyal following amongst the general public. Barnsby was a contractor to the Ministry of Defence and Police Forces throughout the UK, producing saddles for the Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery and the Household Cavalry. Testament to its high standing, Barnsby formerly held a Royal Warrant.

Barnsby products have been used and endorsed by respected international competitors at the highest levels including Anky Van Grunsven, John & Michael Whitaker, Ginny Leng, Richard Davison, Di Lampard and Mary King.

A buyer or licensee has the opportunity to build upon the Barnsby brand recognition and position it for growth by capitalizing on both the popularity of British heritage brands internationally and the opportunity for revival or expansion into other product categories. Hermès (which began life as a saddler in 1837), Chanel, Ralph Lauren and Gucci are just some of the high-end global fashion houses which have equestrian origins or have cultivated links with the equestrian world. This is a unique opportunity to acquire one of Britain’s oldest and most admired brands with enormous potential.
