Robert Hunter Kelly and Charles Graham John King of Ernst & Young LLP as Joint Administrators of Spicers Limited (in Administration) (“Spicers”, “Spicers UK” or the “Company”) have appointed Hilco Streambank to actively seek interested parties with regards to the sale of the Spicers intellectual property assets.

Spicers was a leading wholesaler of office supplies in the UK.

The brand has a long-standing history as an office supplies business with a heritage of over 120 years. Founded in 1796 as a paper mill and paper supplies business, Spicers went on to become recognised as one of the market-leading businesses in the office supplies sector. Spicers’ product range expanded exponentially and included office supplies, workplace solutions, furniture, workwear, PPE and print.

The Company served the reseller market across the UK. Spicers has developed relationships with over 2,500 dealers, many of whom depended on Spicers as their primary wholesale source. Customers included Office Power, Paperstone, Euroffice, Choice Stationery Supplies, Complete Business Solutions, UKOS and Office Direct, amongst others.

The Spicers brand has a well-established reputation and national recognition.

For the 2019 financial year, Spicers UK generated sales of £159.6m.

The acquisition opportunity offers the buyer the opportunity to enter or expand in the office supplies, distribution and logistics markets. With the Spicers brand holding a market-leading position, the buyer can capitalise on a well-known and highly-regarded reputable brand which can be taken in a new direction or acquired as an expansion opportunity.

The brand has been established for over 120 years and has a rich heritage dating back to 1796 when John Edward Spicer acquired the Alton paper mill and paper supplies business. Spicers enjoys a high level of brand awareness with national recognition. The brand benefits from a well-established reputation. Spicers was dedicated to providing the best service and support for its customers, by giving access to a wide range of products and offering service solutions to grow its customers' businesses. Spicers established long-standing relationships with a broad dealer/customer base, many of whom depended on Spicers as their primary wholesale source.

Registered Trade Marks

The Company’s portfolio of registered trade marks protect the “Spicers” brand name and logo in the UK and various international territories.

The Company also owns registered trade marks for a number of sub-brands such as:

  • “FLiCKi” – an online catalogue sales tool issued annually which featured indexing and search facilities, allowing users to flick through its pages;
  • “BrilliantOffice” – Spicers’ popular customer loyalty scheme;
  • “Merit” – Spicers’ historical furniture brand.

A non-refundable deposit of 20% will be payable by the buyer within 48 hours of bid acceptance. VAT, if applicable, at 20% will be added to the price. A buyer’s premium of 10% applies to this sale.
